ritual

Project Premise:

The ritual and detail are both means of raising awareness and connecting us to how we might create meaning through our experiences. Rituals include rites of passage in which there is a specific goal of entering a new group through the ritual process or being recognized by the ritual. The nature of many rituals allows us to explore design through are sensory engagement rather than merely relying on imagery or representation. By engaging ourselves directly in the performance of ritual we have another opportunity to practice the role of “paying attention” as a designer. This project will incorporate aspects of Project I and II. Your own description of what is a detail should be an iterative process through which you keep building a bigger, better description as you gain new insights along the way.

my ritual

this project by far has been the most meaningful work i have done in the architecture program at Iowa state. this project was focused on ritual with food. a ritual is a meaningful repetitive process. for me this was type one diabetes. every time i eat it is a repetitive process. designing an experience that portrays my daily battles. the brief called for a building design that is based on a dish that includes a ritual. I went against the brief and i believe this challenging of the brief led to a success and a very meaningful project.

for my design, i wanted to create interactive structures that represented the highs and lows of my blood sugars. having a high blood sugar is exhausting and causes a diabetic to feel very tired. climbing up these structures are made to be tiring. when coming down from a high there is a sense of relief, like you would feel going down a slide. however, when the sugars are low its the opposite. there's rush of anxiety and energy. so i created in ground structures that resembled the same as the above ground structures but in reverse order.

i  created a journey around the site of ada haden that included 20 different structures, all that resemble the highs and lows of a blood sugar.
